The BNSC Boys U-16 Celtic & U-17 Premier teams showed well at GotSoccer's #1 ranked College Showcase Event.
Since its creation in 2007, at the request of college scouts and coaches from all over the country, the San Diego Surf College Cup has quickly become the premier fall season college showcase. Boasting over 300 scouts and coaches since the ver first event, the College Cup truly brings players and their prospective colleges together.
The U-16 Celtic team competed in a very difficult group, going 0-1-2. Celtic opened up the Showcase with a 2-2 draw against Exiles Black, a team ranked in the top 10 in Southern California. They were pitted against Santa Clara Sporting, who ranks 14th in the nation and was a Far West Regional Semi-Finalist last year. Celtic battled hard, trailing 1-0 until 15 minutes left in the match. Santa Clara Sporting would put 3 goals away in the final 15 minutes and the Celtic boys fell 4-1. Santa Clara Sporting went on to lose 1-0 in the final. Celtic's last game of the Showcase was against the New Mexico Strikers, who beat Santa Clara Sporting to open up group play. Celtic dominated much of the game and came away with a 1-1 draw.
The U-17 Premier team paved their way to the final with a convincing 5-0 victory in their first game against San Diego Surf Premier. In their second game the 17's dropped a tough decision 0-1 to Hurst SC from North Texas. The boys would rebound though winning their final game in group play 2-0 against Pateadores from Cal-South. In their Semi-Final match, the boys beat Football Australia 2-0 to advance to the final where they faced South Bay Force. In the final the boys had numerous opportunities to find the back of the net but unfortuanately could not do so. South Bay came away with the victory 2-0.
Coe Michaelson, BNSC Technical Director & Coach of the U-17 Premier Team was pleased with both teams over the weekend. "I though both teams played well this weekend. Surf College Cup is widely considered to host some of the toughest competition in the nation and for our boys to show the way they did was very encouraging. It is not every day that you have a team capable of reaching the final of such a presitigious showcase."
