Out of 7 Idaho teams to advance to the quarterfinals of Far West Regionals in 2010, BNSC had 4 of these teams. By Sunday, only one Idaho team remained, the U15 Boise Nationals Barcelona boys facing off against the Mt Hamilton (San Jose) PAC Tigres for the Far West Regional Title and an opportunity to be the first Idaho team ever to win the prestigious tournament. An early goal from PAC was almost equalized by half time on two occasions. Derek Pascal was denied on a 1 on 1 with Boise native, Derek Carver, the PAC goalkeeper who played for the Barcelona team up until 18 months ago and will be returning to Boise this fall, rejoining his Regional Final opposition. Minutes later, Logan Tooley was able to beat Carver off the dribble, only to see his shot cleared off the line by a fully extended defender for PAC. Heading into the half down 1-0, the Nationals stepped up the pressure and looked sure to equalize throughout the majority of the 2nd half. Most notably, Makkay Moffat was able to beat the PAC defense to a through ball, only to be smashed by a PAC defender who did not touch the ball, an effort that was also cleared off the line by a sliding defender for a corner, an incident that BNSC was inexplicably NOT awarded a PK for. Within minutes, a game that looked sure to turn in the Nationals favor took a surprising turn for the worse as PAC hit back with a counter attack to take a 2-0 lead with 10 minutes remaining. BNSC then shifted into a 3-4-3, but were unable to conjure the magic necessary. As the first Idaho team since 2001 to make a Regional Final, our hats are off to the U15 Barcelona boys.
On the club level, only Crossfire Premier out of Seattle, WA had more teams advance to the quarterfinals in the entire 14 state Far West Region. Here is a review of BNSC team performances at Albuquerque, NM Far West Regionals 2010.
